Beginning at midnight, August 22, 2003, tolls at the Hampton Toll Plaza facility will be collected in the northbound direction only with toll rates for all vehicles to be doubled ($2.00 for passenger cars). All southbound traffic will travel toll-free through the Hampton Toll Plaza. Ramp tolls will remain unchanged.
During peak traffic periods, northbound traffic will be able to utilize up to 10 lanes, all staffed by toll attendants. Southbound traffic will utilize four lanes and will not be staffed. "This major change is on a trial basis and will be evaluated as to it's effectiveness" NHDOT Commissioner Carol Murray explained.

This experiment has been abandoned. It backfired.
It has gone back to $1 in each direction.
Too many people were seeking alternative routes to evade the $2 northbound toll. That tied up traffic on route 1, which parallels I-95 through Seabrook , Hampton, and Portsmouth. If you lived in Hampton, you'd get off before the toll.

The toll "experiment" has been abandoned for the winter only. The one-way toll collection system was returned to two-way tolls due to safety concerns regarding snow and ice build up. A permanent plan for one-way toll collection will be formulated this winter. Once approved, southbound toll collection structures will be removed.
