Have you ever met a politician yet who didn't want in our pockets one way or another? Tolls, fees, fines, whatever you want to call them to lessen the blow are TAXES! Folks we pay lots and lots of taxes. Add it up some time. Sales tax, car registration fees, gas tax, car safety inspection fees (on brand new cars too what a rip off), driver license fee, excise tax, property tax, lottery, income tax, fines, just to name a few.
NY, where I live, taxes you to death and then afterward. Remember when NY began this thing called a lottery. All the proceeds would be used for education. That sold us to say YES since we saw it as a way to lessen our property taxes. Lottery is sucking in money like a hoover vacuum cleaner and my school taxes still choke me!
We need to put our elected officials on notice that they have enough of our money to buy our votes. Rather than build toll booths and hire a bureacracy of workers and administrators to collect it thus netting a few bucks for actual road improvement, lets stop the BS and shift the money out of giveaway programs and into roads and bridges needed to keep the economy going. Oh and if you think a toll might just be temporary or won't go up for residents, tell me the last time a toll was reduced or a toll taken OFF a bridge or road that had one. Just like taxes. They are there forever and grow like cancers.
Oh and to those who want to charge more to out of staters. Try running NC without us buying gas, eating in restaurants, shopping in stores, staying in motels, playing golf, etc. You think your taxes are high now. Do it without us helping. Tourism is a big money maker for NC. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
I look at it like this. If I want a new driveway, I have to pay for it with what I earn. I can't go to my boss and demand he give me a raise or charge my wife a toll to park her car on it. No I have to tighten my belt. I don't know any state that couldn't cinch the belt up a notch and shift money over to road improvements. Unless you make them do it, they won't. They will always take the easy way out...tax you more. The crisis is averted until the next time then CHA CHING up goes the taxes, tolls, fees, fines, surcharges. NOPE don't let em fool ya. Make them do their jobs and fix the damn roads!
