Re: I am new....
I am new to this website. I am leaving on the first week of August to Florida from Pennsylvania with Hubby and Pooch. I am planning to do a 2 day layover on way, as we do not want to drive straight thru. My first stop would be in the South Carolina area and my 2nd stop still not sure... I'm thinking of Jacksonville. Any good advise from anyone who has done this trip. I have been reviewing the post's and most are very old, 2 or more years ago. Any help, suggestions, warnings would be greatly appreciated.
What are the safest cities to stop in for overnight stay?
What are cities, Exit's and area's to avoid?
Are the Welcome centers safe to stop in? Which ones should I not stop in?
My main concern on this trip is safety, nothing more, nothing less. Food, sightseeing, south of the border don't care.
I would love feedback! Thank you in advance everyone!

I'll assume central Pennsylvania to Central Florida (about 16 hours). If you intend to stopover twice before arriving, and want to drive roughly the same distance all three days then Fredericksburg, Virginia (Exit 126 or 130) and Florence, South Carolina (Exit 164) are good stops.
There is a feature on our website that helps you with trip planning by suggesting good overnight stopovers along I-95. You can find it here:

Generally speaking, stick with exits that have a good selection of services. Then choose a hotel in a busy, well lit location. Hotels with interior hallways are generally safer. Also, avoid first floor rooms.
The same holds true for Rest Areas and Welcome Centers. If you must stop, choose a larger rest area and park in busy, well lit areas. Avoid small, rural, unlit rest areas.
Have a great trip!
