US 301 instead of I-95

Postby ryobi88 » Mon Jul 16, 2007 7:35 pm

I've been doing the I-95 to Hilton Head trip for years now, but I like to take US route 301 until I get thru Virigina. Has anyone used this way? How was it and is it worth it to get around the traffic jams on I-95 in Virginia?

We took it northbound once. Not sure it saved any time. It was a more leisurely and scenic way to go with several little towns along the route. We hit the area very early in the morning so we had the road to ourselves much of the way. I say try it once and see.

My family and I take U.S. 301 every summer when we travel down to North Carolina. It saves a lot of time in alleviation to the constant traffic jams on I-95 mainly in Virginia. To take the bad with the good, you will run into a whole lot of traffic lights and shopping centers on U.S. 301 between Waldorf and La Plata, MD. But once you pass La Plata on Route 301 south, it is smooth sailing from there.
