Hello everyone,
We normally travel to Florida using the same route. The few times we've mixed it up, we've gotten nailed in traffic anywhere through New York, Philadelphia or more frequently DC. We've found that drive a bit further keeps us moving and ultimately saves a bit of time.
We travel: TCH2-95-495-84-87(287)-78-81-64-95
This year we want to want to complete the drive in 1 overnight stay, so time of day travelling is a bit more of concern. I am inquiring about staying on the 84 until I pick up the 81, then take 66 & 17 back on to the 95.
TCH2-95-495-84-81-66-17-95
If we leave our home around 5:30am with our normal route, we'd end up on the 87 around 4:30pm - 5:00pm. True that it would we'd be starting North of where the traffic will be heaviest, but I'd prefer to not take any chances.
What is the drawback of the new route?

It may be a little out of your way but I take I-81 south
through Winchester VA and catch I-77 through
Charlotte NC and down to I-95. Traffic is bearable
except around Charlotte at rush hour.
I am near Kingston Ontario

Problem with I-81 besides being out of the way, is weather -- parts of it run through mountains and you might run a greater risk of encountering bad weather there in December.
