We grabbed the travel guides at the local rest stop and with a smart phone in one hand and the guide in the other my wife was looking up places to stop around the Savannah area.
Exit 104 has a distinct paper mill odor but don't let that deter you!
We got a great deal at the Hampton Inn, a Brand New Hotel at this exit with a special travel guide walk-in rate of $79. The room was awesome with a VERY comfortable bed.
We at dinner at an authentic Japanese restaurant called Miwa, just on the other side of the highway. It had to have been the best Japanese food I have ever had and so surprising for this out-of-the-way place.
I want to go back and spend some time in Savannah, I think we are going to stay in the Pooler area.
If your looking for a clean affordable place to stop I think this exit is something you might want to check out.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn after reading your post... thanks! Nice hotel at a great price. The exit has some nice restaurants and shopping too!
