Brooklyn to Key Largo - Interesting Stops, Alternate Routes
My wife and I will be going from Brooklyn, NY to Key Largo during Christmas. I would like to find out about any interesting stops we could make along the way or some things to see.

To Adam:
Depending on the time you have, some interesting stops along the way are Fredericksburg and Williamsburg, VA,(both for history), Charleston, SC, and Savannah, Ga (two charming soouthern cities) and Daytona Beach, FL (you can drive your car on the beach. If you have a chance drive the 100 miles from Key Largo down to Key West--it is slow, but a beautiful drive and Key West, once you get off Duval St. is a great place with beautiful sunsets.

Another idea you may want to do is maybe on the way back drive up through Philadelphia, which following I-95 will get you through or/and then going up along the Delaware River, from I-95 going North along either side of the river, then you can stop at towns like Lahaska, New Hope in PA and Lambertville, NJ.
US 202 then takes you out of there towards NYC.
I would then go back 202 to I-287 North then I-78 East till you get back by the Newark Airport area.

Run down state by state on best places to stop:
Maine: Kennebunkport or even better yet, drive along US 1 between Portland and Portsmouth, NH.. scenic
New Hampshire: Manchester, cute town (bickfords has the best breakfast!)
Massachusetts: Boston (need i say more)
Rhode Island: Providence (mall where I-195 and I-95 meets at and also the colleges near by) driving US 1 from South Kingstown to Westerly is a nice scenic drive.
Connecticut: Not too much excitement really, portions of US 1 between New London and New Haven is scenic, some of the towns along the way are nice. Visiting Greenich is worth doing by taking the last few exits off I-95 before entering NY, go onto US 1 for a little while then get back on I-95 somepoint in Rye (check out playland parkway if you see it, go onto the next paragraph)
New York: Ill let you figure out this one if your catching my drift. But if you have a few minutes.. this is well north of the city, take the Playland Parkway exit (this is in the town of Rye) and take it to the very end.. theres a old school amusement park and somewhat decent looking beach (NICE on a clear day).
New Jersey: I wouldnt suggest anything really unless your looking for good dining off the Turnpike. Newark (particularly downtown), New Brunswick, East Windsor, Bordentown, Cherry Hill. Well off I-95 (about an hours drive away) checking out the jersey shore stands out from the rest of the world, beach wise. Worth checking out Asbury Park, Spring Lake, Deal, Belmar are the best shore towns to check out in the north, in the south... all of LBI, Longport-Margate-Atlantic City-Ventnor and most definatly Cape May is worth checking out. If your a mountain person, NW Jersey is VERY NICE and even closer, around the watchung mountains along I-78.
[Pennslyvania if choose to avoid the turnpike] Center City Philadelphia. Phila zoo, City Line Ave, Penns Landing are places worth checking out. If you want to go out of the way a bit, Doylestown is a very cute town, very trendyish. If your looking to avoid I-95 altogether, the PA Turnpike and I-81 has some scenery. Lancaster area is very beautiful if you dont mind cowpies!
Delaware: Honestly, i cant think of anything. Sorry.
Maryland: Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Havre De Grace.. check out Cal Ripken's statue, Elkton is a cute town. Ocean City is allright, not too exciting. US 15-Catoctin Mountain Hwy isa nice scenic drive but very fast paced. Then theres also I-81 to the west.
Washington, DC: You can figure that one out
Virginia: Williamsburg(going off I-95), downtown Richmond, parts of Alexandaria are nice, the good parts of Virginia Beach are really nice. Way off I-95, perhaps if you take US 29 through the state or I-81, very scenic going through the mountains (US 29 goes through mainly foothills). Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Roanoke.. i can go on.. many virginia towns and cities are worth checking out on US 29 and I-81. If you have some extra time, take the Blue Ridge Parkway if you can.. VERY BEAUTIFUL especially hugging along the Bedford County line. There are pull off spots to check out the views.
North Carolina: Immediatly off I-95, theres nothing exciting at all to be honest and thats my homestate! BUt if you want to go an hour away from I-95, you would find a lot. New Bern, Wilmington, Edenton along the coast are worth checking out along the coast [outer banks, crystal coast and Brunswick Co Beaches of course as well]. Asheville in the mountains IS WORTH TAKING A DAY checking out.... biltmore estate, blue ridge parkway, the area in general. All of teh NC major cities are worth driving through, nothing THAT exciting except lots of new construction everywhere for development and road building. Last, I-26 betwen Asheville and the TN state line is no doubt the nicest interstate to drive on in NC, prob one of the top 10 in the USA i think! Blue RIdge Parkway in NC, ironically, never driven on any of it believe it or not but it does traverse the highest elevations in the east coast.
South Carolina: South of the Border DUH! Florence is a great pitstop and NOTHING MORE, dont go to downtown, its depressing. A side trip, you could take US 17 along the newly built suspension bridge into Savannah then take I-16 back to I-95. Again, like NC, you'd have to go an hour away from I-95 to check out some stuff.. Myrtle Beach and Charleston on teh coast (if in the charleston area, on johns island, check out Bohicket Road, very scenic and if you get a chance, go into Kiawah Island to check out the island, a tropical taste from Florida) . HIlton head is a bit overlooked and overrated, not worthchecking out. The upstate of SC (the mountains), i have not ever been there but friends of mine say Greenville and Clemson are very nice towns checking out.
Georgia: Savannah as mentioned. Tybee Island IS NOT worthchecking out.. been there twice... very dirty and the ocean is nasty there. St Marys from what a frend told me is a very nice town hugging the FL border
Florida: Someone else can put Florida, ive said enough
I may go back and add stuff later on but this about all i can think of; more imput would be awsome on someones respective state there from.

Nicely said Lou. As for Florida A1A from St Augustine to Daytona is a picture perfect drive. The Kennedy Space Museum at Cape Canaveral is also worth the side trip. Pick up A1A again at Cocoa Beach to West Palm Beach for ocean front drive, get back on I-95 to bypass the Lauderdale Miami bit, John Pennekamph? State Park at Key Largo is a nice diversion for glass bottom boat rides to a reef (bring Gravol)
Do a Google search for more info.
