Thanksgiving Day travel worries NJ to FL

Postby kimbac3 » Sat Nov 19, 2005 9:06 pm

We are heading down I-95 from NJ (getting on I95 at Del Mem bridge area). I was reading on the other thread that it may be crowded in the Baltimore/DC area. We were planning on doing I95 to Baltimore then 895 Harbor tunnel, then to 295 through DC to the Richmond area. How does this sound? I heard there is construction on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge..will that be a major problem? This is our first trip down and I'm really worried!! Does anyone have any advice?????
Thanks,
Kimba

It's ALWAYS bad around Washington, best advice is to avoid that during the rush hour.

And unless you're going to do the trip non-stop - make a hotel reservation in advance.

Not sure 295 thru DC is a better option than 495 around DC..Best option is to avoid DC at rush hour..And i would stop worrying,if you get stuck in traffic just put on some good music and enjoy, you will get there sooner or later.

I always take 295 between Baltimore and Washington. I usually leave either late at night or early in the morning so I rarely hit any traffic. 295 is a direct route and saves at least 20 minutes. I am leaving for Disney at 3:30 AM on Thanksgiving morning and plan to take 295 right after I come out of the tunnel.

TDNJ I also take the 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) from shortly after the tunnel to Washington but get on to the 495 to go around Washington'the original post says he will use 295 to go through washington..Kimbac3 use 495 around Washington.. then I-95 south to Richmond..

I really appreciate all your advice. We'll probably go with 495 around DC. Hopefully the traffic won't be too bad. The kids will be all set with a DVD player and snacks so they'll be all set. DH and I have our own Cds so it shouldn't be too bad.
Thanks Again,

Kimba,
I think your best bet is to get on the road early to get past that area before the crowds. If you're on the road by 6 at the latest, it shouldn't be too bad by the time you hit that area.

If you get on the road early take 295 through Washington. You get on 95 right before the bridge. There should not be traffic there at 6 or 7 am on Thanksgiving. If there is traffic at the bridge then you won't be stuck in it for too long. Otherwise you have to west on 495 and that is an extra 20 miles onto your trip.
