I-95 the 5th Most Dangerous Interstate in the Country

The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that traffic fatalities have increased 10.4 percent during the first six months of 2016 compared to the same time period in 2015.  These increases are most likely the result of more drivers on the road and a greater percentage of these motorists are driving distracted. A recent study found that 61 percent of drivers use their cell phones on some drives, most drives or every drive.

On average, Americans spend 293 hours driving approximately 10,900 miles each year. A detailed study by EverQuote examined the most dangerous interstates in America, based on fatalities per mile. This analysis used raw data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fatality Analysis Report System from 2010 through 2015 and found fatality rates based on highway lengths.
That data was then compared to the data from EverQuote’s safe-driving app, EverDrive, representing over 6 million trips and 80 million miles of driving.

That study ranked Interstate 95 the 5th most deadly highway in America.

Interstate 95 runs 1926 miles from Miami, Florida to Houlton, Maine. The highway is the 5th most dangerous interstate in the United States with 0.89 fatalities per mile. It has been in the top 10 for fatalities each year for the past six years.

I-195 to I-95 Ramp Closures, Traffic Delays in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is alerting motorists on I-195 West in Providence to the possibility of delays because of work to repair bumpy pavement on a portion of the highway leading to I-95 South.

Construction is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday night, November 5. It will involve the closure of one lane of travel on the ramp through the evening and overnight hours, reopening to traffic by 5 a.m. on Monday, November 6. This work will level the roadway, but result in a rough, milled driving surface.

The next night, Monday, November 6 paving work is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and last until 3 a.m. on Tuesday, November 7. The paving also requires the closure of one of the two lanes of travel on the ramp. This work is weather-dependent, and could be postponed due to rain.

The section of ramp being repaired is in a different location than where RIDOT repaired a depression in the roadway with a weekend-long lane closure last month. The second phase of that repair project will require another weekend lane closure. It is tentatively scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. on Friday, November 17 through 5 a.m. on Monday, November 20. Long delays should be expected from that work, and motorists should plan accordingly, either giving themselves extra time for travel or planning to take an alternate route.
