Chester Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Driving: Commodore Barry Bridge tolls... If you take this route (US-322), it's cashless. E-ZPass or bill by mail only. Expect rush hour congestion. Expect heavy delays weekday mornings (7-9am) and evenings (4-6:30pm), especially near the Commodore Barry Bridge interchange. This stretch frequently has roadwork - stay alert for lane shifts and reduced speed limits.
Gas & Food Stops: Gas stations directly off I-95 exits in Chester tend to be pricier and in rougher areas. A better option would be to wait until you reach Ridley Park/Prospect Park exits (just north) or Marcus Hook (just south) for safer, cleaner stops. The Wawa in Marcus Hook is a popular trucker/traveler stop.
Safety Considerations: Chester has high crime rates, so if you must exit, stick to main commercial areas during daylight. Keep valuables out of sight and doors locked. The rest stops and service plazas are better options than random exits.
Alternative Route: If traffic is bad, consider US-13 (parallel to I-95) though it's slower with traffic lights.
