Norwalk Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Timing and Traffic: Weekday rush hours are rough: about 6:30–9:30 am and 3:30–7:00 pm. Sunday evenings can also back up toward NYC. The stretch of I-95 over the Norwalk River (Yankee Doodle Bridge) and the I-95/Route 7 (Exit 15) interchange is a frequent bottleneck with crashes and weaving.
Enforcement and Safety: Expect Connecticut state police presence, especially near ramps and overpasses; work zones frequently drop to 45 mph. In heavy rain, the curves and bridge joints near Exits 14–16 get slick; give extra space.
Interchange Quirks: Exits are tightly spaced (roughly 13–16) with short merge lanes; stay alert for fast lane changes. The I-95/Route 7 (SoNo/West Ave) area has ongoing construction and occasional lane shifts; expect sudden slowdowns and aggressive merges. Speed limit is mostly 55 mph here, and it’s actively enforced.
Recommended Quick Stops: Darien Service Plazas (just southwest of Norwalk) have clean restrooms, multiple food options, usually very busy but the fastest in/out. They also typically have EV fast charging. Gas is usually cheaper off-highway along US-1 (Connecticut Ave/Westport Ave) than at service plazas.
