Philadelphia Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Timing: Avoid rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM weekdays) at all costs - this stretch regularly ranks among the worst in the nation. The merge where I-76 joins I-95 near the airport is notoriously chaotic. Weekend construction is common, especially in summer.
Speed Enforcement: The Pennsylvania State Police actively patrol this corridor. Speed limit is 55 mph through the city (often ignored, but strictly enforced).
Quick Stops: Delaware rest stops (just before Philly going north, just after going south) are much nicer than anything directly on Philly's I-95. If you need gas/food, exit to Delaware or New Jersey rather than Philly proper for easier on/off access.
Road Conditions: Potholes in Philadelphia are legendary. Philly's freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on pavement. The right lane often deteriorates first; middle lanes usually smoother.
