Fredericksburg Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers

Traffic & Timing: Avoid rush hours (7-9am, 4-6:30pm) - this stretch is notorious for backups, especially near the Route 3 interchange. The area between exits 130-133 is a major bottleneck; consider using Route 17 as a bypass if traffic is heavy. Weekend southbound traffic can be brutal Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.

Speed Traps: The State of Virginia is strict about speeding (reckless driving at 80+ mph or 20+ over limit). Watch for speed limit drops, especially near the 130 exit area. Virginia State police often patrol the Route 3 overpass and near Massaponax.

Quick Stops: Exit 130B (Route 3 East) has the best food options - Central Park with Wawa, Chick-fil-Á, Sheetz and more. Exit 126 (Thornburg) is a bit quieter, and a less crowded gas/food stop. Avoid the cramped truck-stop exits if you just need a quick bathroom break.

Worth Knowing: Cell service can get spotty in patches. If there's an accident, you're stuck - there are limited alternate routes. The Rappahannock River bridge (around mile marker 133) often has construction/lane closures.
