Miami Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Timing: Avoid rush hours religiously (7-9:30 AM, 4-7 PM weekdays) - I-95 becomes a parking lot, especially near Downtown/Midtown. The Golden Glide Road to SR-826 (Palmetto) interchange is notoriously congested - consider the Turnpike as an alternate if you have SunPass. Weekends aren't much better - beach traffic clogs things Friday afternoons through Sunday evenings.
Toll Considerations: Get a SunPass or ensure your toll-by-plate works - Express lanes run through much of Miami's I-95 and can save you significant time. Express lane prices fluctuate wildly based on traffic ($0.50 to $10+).
Driving Culture: Miami drivers are aggressive - expect frequent lane changes without signals. Don't camp in the left lane. The rightmost lane often becomes exit-only with little warning - stay center-left if just passing through.
Safety & Practical: Keep valuables out of sight even while driving - smash-and-grabs happen at red lights near highway exits. Gas up before entering Miami proper - prices jump significantly. If you need to stop, the Florida Turnpike Service Plazas (accessible via exits to Turnpike) are safer/cleaner than most I-95 exits.
