Santee Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Driving: Watch for sudden slowdowns at Exit 98 (SC-6) - it's the main outlet mall exit and gets congested, especially on weekends. The speed limit drops significantly as you approach the Lake Marion bridge - troopers often patrol this area - If there's an accident, I-95 can back up for miles here with limited alternate routes.
Food & Fuel Stops: Skip the immediate exit gas stations - prices are often inflated. Drive a mile or two off the interstate for better deals. Clark's Restaurant (Exit 98) is a local favorite for Southern cooking - much better than fast food. The truck stops have surprisingly decent food if you're in a hurry.
Worth Knowing: This is a major refueling zone between the Carolinas and Florida - expect crowds during holiday travel. Lake Marion is visible from I-95; if you need a break, Santee State Park (short detour) has nice lake views. The outlets at Exit 98 can be a good leg-stretcher, but they're often crowded. Cell service can be spotty between exits in this rural stretch.
Best strategy: Fill up with gas, use the restrooms, and grab food all at once to minimize stops in this area.
