Wilmington Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Driving: The Delaware Memorial Bridge toll is coming. Have E-ZPass or be ready to pay. There is a heavy merge zone where I-95, I-295, and I-495 split/converge - stay alert. Speed traps are common here. The Delaware State Police are active, especially near the MD/DE line. Rush hours (7-9am, 4-6:30pm) can get congested despite it being a short stretch.
Rest Stops: The Chesapeake House (Maryland side, just before Delaware) has better food options than the Delaware rest area. The Biden Welcome Center (northbound in Delaware) is decent for a quick break.
Route Options: Consider using the I-495 bypass around Wilmington if traffic is heavy - saves time during backups. I-295 also loops around (NJ side) if there's an accident.
Good to Know: This is one of the most expensive toll corridors in the US. There is no sales tax in Delaware - if you need to stop for purchases, take advantage. Gas is often cheaper in Delaware than New Jersey or Maryland.
