Quirky Routing: I-95 does not go through downtown Boston. Through traffic follows the I-95/Route 128 belt west of the city between Canton (south side) and Peabody/Reading (north side). Watch the splits at both ends so you don’t get sent onto I-93 into the city or onto MA-128 toward Gloucester.
Best/Worst Times: Best windows are roughly 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and after 7:30 p.m. Weekday peaks run 6:30–10 a.m. and 3–7 p.m. Summer Fridays get heavy northbound toward NH/ME; Sunday late afternoon is heavy southbound back toward Boston/RI.
Watch Out for Shoulder Running: On I-95/128 between Needham and Waltham, the right shoulder opens as a travel lane during peak periods. Only use it when the overhead signs say it’s open.
Enforcement and Rules: State Police are active, especially near Waltham, Peabody, and Canton, and in work zones. Hands‑free only for phones. “Move Over” is enforced for stopped emergency/maintenance vehicles. Trucks are often restricted from the far left lane where posted.
