Manning Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Speed Trap Awareness: This stretch of I-95 is notorious for aggressive speed enforcement, especially around the Santee/Manning exits (98, 102, 108). Local and state police actively patrol here - stick to the speed limit religiously. Don't rely on radar detectors; many officers use instant-on radar.
Traffic Patterns: There is heavy traffic congestion during summer weekends and holidays (beach traffic to/from Myrtle Beach). Friday afternoons southbound and Sunday afternoons northbound are worst. The Santee River bridge area can bottleneck.
Gas & Food Strategy: Exit 119 (Manning) typically has better prices than exits closer to Santee. Avoid the tourist-trap restaurants right off I-95 near Santee - they are often overpriced and mediocre. If you need a meal break, locals recommend driving a couple miles into Manning proper for better value.
Worth Knowing: This is the last cheap gas before entering the pricier Lowcountry if heading south. Cell service can be spotty between exits. If you need a rest, Santee State Park (small detour) is much nicer than rest stops.
