Portland Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Timing: Exit 44 can be a bottleneck. This is the main Portland exit and gets congested, especially 3-5 PM on weekdays. Toll plaza just south of Portland - have EZ-Pass or cash ready. Left lane is for passing. Mainers take this seriously and will tailgate aggressively if you camp there.
Weather Watch: Fog can roll in fast near the coast, even when it's clear inland. In Winter black ice is real, especially on bridges.
Local Quirks: Speed limit drops suddenly from 70 to 50 mph through the Portland area - cops do watch this. Don't be surprised by slower traffic - many tourists and locals don't rush. Gas is cheaper before you get to the Maine Turnpike tolls if coming from the south
The Bottom line: If you're just passing through, stay alert around Exit 44, have toll money ready, and budget an extra 15 minutes during rush hour.
