Providence Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic & Timing: Avoid rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-6:30 PM weekdays) - the downtown viaduct gets brutally congested. There are left lane exits unusual for I-95, some exits are on the LEFT side through downtown, so stay alert. Merge early near the split where I-195 branches off toward Cape Cod.
Navigation Quirks: The highway elevates through downtown with sharp curves - not the time to speed or zone out. GPS can be wonky in the tunnel sections. Know your exit in advance. If you miss your exit, don't panic - the area is small and you can loop back quickly.
Good to Know: Get your Gas/food before Providence. There are limited convenient options right off I-95 in the city. Better stops in Warwick (south) or Attleboro/Pawtucket (north). State troopers are active. RI has aggressive speed enforcement, especially in construction zones. EZ-Pass is recommended if you're using the Newport/Jamestown bridges or continuing to MA/CT.
If You Need a Break: Take Exit 22A to Federal Hill (Atwells Ave). Just 5 minutes off the highway for excellent Italian food and coffee. India Point Park (near I-195 split) for quick waterfront views.
