Smithfield Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-95 Travelers
Traffic Timing: Avoid passing through the area from 7-9am or from 4-6pm on weekdays if possible - the commuter traffic to Raleigh can slow things down.
Traffic & Speed Traps: This portion of I-95 is a heavy enforcement zone. North Carolina State troopers actively patrol this stretch, especially around the 95/40 interchange. The 70mph limit drops quickly near exits - watch for this. Traffic can bottleneck where I-95 and I-40 meet (just south of Smithfield).
Practical Stuff: A better rest stop would be the one at mile marker 97 (northbound). It's cleaner than most. Gas prices are usually cheaper at exits 95-97 than right at the I-95/I-40 split. Regarding food options, Exit 95 has the usual chains, but locals eat at Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q (a regional chain worth trying).
