An I-95 construction project to repair a flood damaged bridge in Robeson County, North Carolina gets underway on Monday, July 17, with traffic restrictions expected to begin the following night.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will repair flood damage to a bridge over Little Marsh Swamp on southbound I-95 near mile marker 35. Previous flooding caused erosion beneath the bridge. Inspectors have determined the bridge to be safe, but to prevent any further erosion, NCDOT is adding rock as part of the repairs under the bridge. The bridge is about 3.5 miles south of the Robeson-Cumberland county border.

Beginning Tuesday night, July 18, the contractor plans to close both southbound lanes and detour traffic off the interstate at Exit 41 and onto N.C. 59 in Cumberland County. Signs and message boards will direct traffic to use U.S. 301, which parallels the interstate, before getting back onto I-95 at Exit 33 in Robeson County.

For a portion of the project, the contractor will close only one of the two southbound lanes overnight and a detour won’t be in place.

To minimize traffic disruptions, NCDOT will limit the single-lane closure to between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. When both lanes must be closed, the detour will be restricted to between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays. There will be no detours or single-lane closures on I-95 during the weekends, when traffic is heavier.

Contract crews are expected to complete the work by Aug. 31. During construction, I-95 northbound traffic will remain unaffected.
