The Connecticut Department of Transportation will replace the Route 1 bridge over I-95 at Exit 9 in Stamford during two weekends in June using an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) process.

CDOT reports that on the weekends of May 31 – June 3 and June 7 – June 10, traffic will be detoured off of Route 1 and off of I-95 in Stamford at Exit 9.

MAJOR DELAYS ARE EXPECTED and motorists are strongly advised to AVOID THIS AREA.

EXIT 9 (GLENBROOK/ROUTE 106) CLOSED

Several hours before the I-95 detour begins, the EXIT 9 ON AND OFF RAMPS WILL CLOSE so the contractor can prepare the ramps to be used as temporary roadways.

  • At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and June 7, both On ramps (Northbound and Southbound) will be closed to install barriers, signs and lane markings. One lane on the southside of Route 1 will also close to channel traffic away from the entrances to the closed On ramps.
  • At 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31 and June 7, the Off ramps (Northbound and Southbound) will be closed to complete installation of the temporary roadways.

When Exit 9 is closed, motorists will use Exit 11 to enter and exit I-95 and follow the local detour route that will be marked with signs.

ROUTE 1 DETOUR

On bridge construction weekends, the ROUTE 1 BRIDGE WILL BE CLOSED between Courtland Avenue and Seaside Avenue, and traffic will be detoured from Route 1 to Courtland Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. These changes will begin on Friday evening and last through Monday morning on the weekends of May 31st and June 7th, see schedule for details. On weekdays, between weekend closures, Route 1 will be open to traffic. For more information, see Route 1 Detour Map.

I-95 DETOUR

I-95 traffic will shift at Exit 9 to temporary roadways located at the On and Off ramps to allow for removal and replacement of the Route 1 bridge. Travel will be REDUCED TO TWO LANES IN BOTH DIRECTIONS WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 20 MPH. These changes will begin on Friday evening and last through Monday morning on the weekends of May 31st and June 7th, see schedule for details. DRIVERS SHOULD EXPECT LONG DELAYS AND SHOULD TAKE ALTERNATE ROUTES IF POSSIBLE. For more information, see I-95 Lane Shift Detour Map.

ACCELERATED BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

ABC is an innovative building technique that reduces the amount of time required to replace a bridge. For this project, bridge components are currently being constructed on a site adjacent to the bridge, and will be fit into place over only two weekends. This off-site work will allow for drastically quicker project completion, while also reducing impacts on the public. If this bridge were replaced using traditional construction methods, it would take two years during which time Route 1/East Main Street’s 17,000 daily travelers would have to cope with one-lane travel. CTDOT previously used ABC to replace two I-84 bridges in Southington and on Route 8/25 in Bridgeport.
