Expect I-95 Delays at Exit 118/Thornburg in Virginia May 21-24

Interstate 95 travelers can expect delays in Spotsylvania County, south of Fredericksburg, on the evenings of May 21-24 as crews lift concrete beams into place at the site of a new Mudd Tavern Road overpass.

I-95 travelers are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays on these evenings.

Message boards on I-95 will provide advance notice of lane closures and detour routes. Traffic signals along these routes will be timed to accommodate increased traffic volumes.

The Mudd Tavern Road overpass is located at Exit 118 in Thornburg. It is between I-95 Exit 126/Spotsylvania and Exit 110/Ladysmith in Caroline County.

All work has been scheduled weather permitting, and may be postponed due to inclement weather. Lane closures are currently scheduled at the following dates and times:

Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22

I-95 Northbound

  • Double lane closure begins at 9:30 p.m.
  • All lanes re-open to traffic by 5 a.m.

I-95 Southbound

  • Double lane closure begins at 9:30 p.m.
  • Between midnight and 5 a.m. all traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each while crews lift concrete beams over the interstate.
  • All lanes re-open to traffic by 5 a.m.

Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24

I-95 Northbound

  • Double lane closure begins at 9:30 p.m.
  • Between midnight and 5 a.m. all traffic will be stopped several times for approximately 30 minutes each while crews lift concrete beams over the interstate
  • All lanes re-open to traffic by 5 a.m.
  • All lanes of I-95 southbound will remain open on these evenings.

Virginia State Police are assisting the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and project contractor Shirley Contracting Company with traffic control in the work zone.

Mudd Tavern Road

Local traffic traveling on Mudd Tavern Road will have access to the I-95 entrance and exit ramps at Exit 118 during the work zone. However, Mudd Tavern Road will be reduced to a single lane from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the I-95 overpass on the evenings of Monday, May 21 through Thursday, May 24.

Local traffic seeking to avoid delays may wish to use Exit 110 at Ladysmith or Exit 126 in Spotsylvania to enter or exit I-95 during the overnight hours.

Daytime I-95 Northbound Lane Closure

Drivers can expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound at Exit 118 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily from Monday, May 21 through Thursday, May 24 to allow crews to stage equipment and materials needed for the overnight beam lifts.

Exit 118 Interchange Improvements and New I-95 Overpass

Construction is underway on a $22.4 million project to build a new four-lane overpass on Mudd Tavern Road bridging I-95. Interchange improvements are also underway at Exit 118 that will improve the alignment of interchange ramps with Mudd Tavern Road, and the alignment of nearby Mallard Road.

Construction began in October 2017 and will be completed in September 2019.
