The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today marked the re-opening of several road and bridge segments as part of a $20.7 million, multi-bridge project known as the I-195 Corridor Bridges Project which addresses five structurally deficient bridges in East Providence and Providence. All the bridge projects in this group are on budget and on schedule. Three were completed four months ahead of schedule.

A significant amount of work remains to be done in the spring including paving on both I-95 and I-195 plus concrete work but four of the five bridges are open to traffic and permanent traffic set ups have been cleared.

RIDOT held a brief ceremony to officially reopen Blackstone Street under the Blackstone Street Bridge which connects Eddy Street and Allens Avenue to mark the conclusion of work on the bridge. Blackstone Street opened to traffic on December 14, 2018. The Blackstone Street Bridge carries I-95 near the Rhode Island Hospitals complex.

The second bridge, the Lyons Avenue bridge opened last week. Two other bridges that parallel Lyons Avenue, the Potter Street Bridge and the Purchase Street Bridge, were rehabilitated last spring and summer and were part of this project. These three bridges connect neighborhoods on either side of the I-195 corridor in East Providence. The original schedule called for finishing the last of these three bridges next spring but RIDOT completed them this year.

The fifth bridge, the Parkway Ramp Bridge which carries traffic from Veterans Memorial Parkway and Warren Avenue onto I-195 will remain closed until completion of the Washington Bridge project. The Parkway Ramp Bridge is substantially complete.

“We’re excited to wrap up work on this important connection near the hospitals complex, as well as wrapping up work on the other four bridges,” RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, Jr. said. “With this project we take five more structurally deficient bridges off our list as we work to rebuild our roads and bridges.”

The I-195 Corridor Bridges Project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT’s ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island’s transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
