The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) alerts motorists that work will start on Monday, February 23, for a $261.5 million project to fix and upgrade the I-95 Girard Point Bridge in southwest Philadelphia. The project has two main parts.
If weather allows, drivers should expect these lane closures:
- Monday, February 23, to Friday, February 27, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM:
One lane closed on northbound I-95 between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611). A second lane closes from midnight to 5:00 AM each night. - Thursday, February 26, and Friday, February 27, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM:
One lane closed on southbound I-95 between Broad Street (Route 611) and Enterprise Avenue. A second lane closes from midnight to 5:00 AM each night. - Monday, March 2, to Friday, March 6:
One lane closed on southbound I-95 between Broad Street (Route 611) and Enterprise Avenue. A second lane closes from midnight to 5:00 AM each night.
Plan for extra travel time in the area, as there will be backups and delays.
In the first two parts of the project, workers will repair the 5,183-foot, two-level main bridge and nine nearby ramps between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611).
Key I-95 Girard Point Bridge Fixes Include
- New surface and joints on the bridge deck.
- New side barriers.
- Repairs and fresh paint on steel parts.
- Fixes to the concrete foundation.
- New lights and better drainage.
- Protection for the main pier in the Schuylkill River.
- Upgraded traffic systems on I-95.
A third part will fix ten more ramps after the first two parts end. A fourth part to repaint the main bridge is planned later. The full project should wrap up in early 2031.
