This Memorial Day Weekend, just under 1 million vehicles are anticipated to travel the I-95 Maine Turnpike from Friday through Monday. This is about a 2.5% decrease over last year, as the stormy weather forecasted for Friday will likely keep folks away for the first part of the weekend. Overall, it is predicted that this year’s traffic will be at about 2022 levels, not the peaks that have been seen in the last two years. Trends show that traffic is often down a few percent on rainy days. Even with a slight dip, Friday will still be the busiest day. Peak travel times are below.

  • Friday, May 23rd – Volume heaviest northbound between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM
  • Saturday, May 24th – Busiest between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM in both directions
  • Monday, May 26th – Volume heaviest southbound between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM

To help welcome travelers, Miles the Maine Turnpike Moose will greet them at the Kennebunk northbound plaza on Friday, May 23, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Miles will be available for photos, and Turnpike staff will be available for interviews.

As travelers hit the road for the holiday weekend, the Maine Turnpike Authority encourages everyone to drive safely, plan ahead, and be patient during peak travel times.

The Maine Turnpike, I-95 from Kittery to Augusta, was designated the Gold Star Memorial Highway in 1965. The designation was the result of efforts by a group of mothers from southern Maine who had lost their sons in World War II. Working with their state legislator, George Carroll of Alfred, they successfully petitioned for the dedication. Carroll authored the bill to honor the valor and sacrifice of those who died in service to our country.

In 2001, the Maine Turnpike Authority recognized this designation by installing new Gold Star Memorial Highway signs. At the re-dedication ceremony, George Carroll, then 80 years old, attended in full dress uniform.

As you travel the Maine Turnpike, we invite you to take a moment to remember the Maineheroes who gave their lives for our country.
