As another winter storm approaches this weekend, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to make progress on low-volume secondary roads affected by last weekend’s storm. Crews are actively working in Stafford, Spotsylvania, and Caroline counties, as well as rural routes in the upper Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
This is a slow-moving and steady process that involves breaking up the ice, which has formed “snowcrete” conditions due to the well-below-freezing temperatures. This situation makes it a challenging process to remove the snow and ice from roadways, which requires heavy equipment to break up and lift the material from the roadway.
Once the weekend winter storm arrives and snow begins to accumulate on the roads, crews will shift their focus to plowing and treating based on priority order. Their first priority is the interstate and primary roads. Then crews will focus on major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities or those with high traffic volumes.
Low-volume secondary roads will be plowed and treated after higher-priority routes are completed and additional resources are available.
VDOT crews will continue to work around the clock in emergency response until all state-maintained roads are safe for travel.
