Expect Delays in Multiple I-95 Work Zones in Virginia This Week

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that drivers should anticipate daytime and overnight lane closures on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area with various construction activities for several Improve95 projects.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled starting tonight, March 25 through early Saturday, March 30:

I-95 Northbound

Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County

  • Monday – Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday – Thursday, 9:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound at Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) for construction activities for the Mudd Tavern Road overpass replacement and interchange improvement project.

Exit 118 Off-Ramp Traffic Shift

On Thursday, March 28, traffic exiting I-95 northbound at Exit 118 will be shifted onto a new off-ramp after the morning rush hour.

Ramp traffic exiting I-95 northbound will intersect with Mallard Road at a new traffic signal. The new traffic signal will be placed into full color operation on Thursday during the traffic shift. Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) traffic will continue to use the existing on-ramp to access I-95 northbound. A new northbound on-ramp will open when the project is complete in summer 2019. Message boards are posted to alert motorists to the upcoming traffic shift.

Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) in Stafford County

  • Tuesday – Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound near Exit 133, just north of the Rappahannock River bridge in Stafford. Expect heavy truck traffic between mile marker 132 and mile marker 134. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone. The work zone is needed for construction activities for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing.

Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road)

  • Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday – Thursday, 9:00 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

Expect a daytime single lane closure on I-95 northbound near Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road) in Stafford County on Monday through Thursday for the Exit 140 diverging diamond interchange project.

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, I-95 northbound will be reduced to two lanes at 9 p.m. and a single lane between 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. to allow crews to remove overhead work platforms used to build the new I-95 overpasses.

I-95 Southbound

Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road)

  • Monday – Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, I-95 southbound will be reduced to two lanes at 9 p.m. and a single lane between 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. to allow crews to remove overhead work platforms used to build the new I-95 overpasses.

Near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg)

  • Monday– Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m.
  • Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  • Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 southbound from mile marker 135, just south of Exit 136/Centreport Parkway in Stafford County to Exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg for construction activities for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing.

Exit 130A (Route 3/Fredericksburg) Exit Ramp CLOSED

  • Tuesday – Wednesday, 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

The I-95 southbound exit ramp to Route 3 eastbound in Fredericksburg will be closed for cleanup from an earlier crash. Drivers can either exit at Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) or use Exit 130B. At Exit 130B, drivers will exit I-95 southbound and merge onto Route 3 westbound and can make a u-Turn at Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park) to access Route 3 eastbound.

Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County

  • Wednesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 southbound at Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) for construction activities for the Mudd Tavern Road overpass replacement and interchange improvement project.

Message boards will warn drivers to stay alert for the work zones ahead and possible delays.
