I-95 travelers passing through Rhode Island during the next two weeks should be aware of the following traffic restrictions that may have an impact on their trip.

Beginning Sunday evening, March 22, 2026, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will implement targeted lane closures and brief detours on Interstate 95 South in Cranston to facilitate the installation of new steel beams over the highway.

This work is scheduled over approximately two weeks, occurring Sunday through Thursday nights from 9:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Nightly operations will proceed as follows:

    • 9:00 p.m. to midnight: Lane reductions on I-95 South approaching Exit 33 (Route 10) to enable preparatory activities for beam placement.
    • Midnight to 4:30 a.m.: Full closure of I-95 South lanes at this location for beam installation. Motorists will be directed onto the Route 10 North off-ramp (Exit 33B), proceeding via Exit 2A to Reservoir Avenue. Upon reaching the ramp’s end, drivers should turn right onto Route 2 South, then left onto Route 10 South, accessing the on-ramp to rejoin I-95 South. Anticipated detour duration: approximately four minutes.

These beams form a key component of new bridge structures within RIDOT’s comprehensive redesign of the I-95/Route 10 interchange—a cornerstone of the I-95 15 Bridges Program. This initiative addresses 15 bridges in poor to fair-poor condition along I-95 and Route 10 from Providence to Warwick, including nine structurally deficient spans. Notably, three rank among Rhode Island’s five most heavily trafficked structurally deficient bridges.

All infrastructure projects remain subject to schedule and scope adjustments based on operational requirements, site conditions, discoveries, and weather.
