The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is projecting about 1.2 million vehicles on the turnpike this Labor Day weekend. This is about a 1.3% increase over the same weekend in 2025.

Friday, September 4, and Monday, September 7th are predicted to see the most traffic. Friday is projected to be the busiest day system-wide, with northbound traffic peaking between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. On Saturday, the heaviest volumes are expected between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM in both directions. On Monday, southbound traffic is anticipated to peak between 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM. In recent years, both the Thursday before and the Tuesday after Labor Day have seen increased traffic as visitors choose to extend their stays longer in Vacationland.

As always, construction and maintenance activities will be suspended during the holiday weekend. However, drivers are reminded that work zones remain in place with narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits. MTA urges all travelers to obey posted limits and drive with caution.

MTA’s beloved mascot, Miles the Moose, will greet visitors at the Kennebunk northbound service plaza on Friday, September 4 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Miles and MTA staff will welcome visitors to Maine for the unofficial last weekend of the summer.
