Multiple Lane Closures for I-95 Work in Virginia This Week, Expect Delays

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that motorists should anticipate daytime and overnight road work this week on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area.

Single and double lane closures are scheduled for various construction activities for Improve 95 projects, including the 10-mile extension of the I-95 Express Lanes, and paving work to improve the travel surface on the interstate.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled:

I-95 Northbound and Southbound

Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 130 (Fredericksburg)

Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound between Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) in Stafford County to Exit 130 (Fredericksburg) for multiple work zones for various construction activities for the Improve 95 projects. A work zone may be two miles to five miles long. Delays are possible. Use caution with crews and construction equipment in the median and along the shoulders. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone.

Interstate 95 Northbound

  • Thru Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

Interstate 95 Southbound

  • Thru Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m.
  • Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  • Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.

The following Improve95 projects will have lane closures this week:

  • I-95 Exit 140 Diverging Diamond Interchange
  • I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing
  • I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension

I-95 Northbound

Exit 126/Spotsylvania

Thru Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Crews will begin milling and paving a section of I-95 northbound near Exit 126/Spotsylvania. Drivers can expect a single lane closure to start at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. The on- and off-ramps to Route 1 will be closed as part of the work. All lanes and ramps will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Motorists may encounter a temporary rough driving surface in the milled sections of the travel lanes. Access I-95 northbound at Exit 118/Thornburg in Spotsylvania or Exit 130/Route 3 in Fredericksburg. Message boards and detour signs will be posted.

Exit 126/Spotsylvania

Thru Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 northbound starting at mile marker 122 to Exit 126/Spotsylvania to allow crews to inspect bridges in the area. Crews will be conducting a routine safety inspection of the Massaponax Church Road bridge over I-95 and the Spotyslvania Parkway bridge over I-95.

I-95 Southbound

Exit 126/Spotsylvania

Tuesday – Thursday, 5 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 southbound starting at Exit 126/Spotsylvania to mile marker 122 for bridge inspection.
