As part of the I-95 widening and reconstruction project from Atlantic Boulevard to south of Emerson Street, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has identified a new preferred design for the I-95 and Emerson Street interchange.

Initially planned as a Median U-Turn (MUT) interchange, the interchange will now be built as a One-Sided Diverging Diamond Interchange (OSDDI) as shown below. The interchange operations of both designs are similar, but the OSDDI offers several advantages over the MUT, including simplified construction phasing, more intuitive driver navigation, and elimination of U-turn movements. The right-of-way footprint will not change with the new design.

This project includes adding lanes to I-95 South and I-95 North for a total of five travel lanes in each direction; raising the profile of I-95 to improve sight distance; replacing the bridges over Emerson Street and San Diego Road; reconfiguring the interchange at I-95 and Emerson Street; installing new ponds and drainage improvements; adding and replacing sound walls; and resurfacing Emerson Street from U.S. 1 to Spring Park Road. Completion is estimated in summer 2028, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
