The North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that about 20 miles of Interstate 95, primarily in Wilson and Halifax counties, will be resurfaced, thanks to two new contracts.

The following improvements will be made:

  • Milled and resurfaced;
  • Restriped with high-visibility, long-lasting pavement markings;
  • Be equipped with raised reflectors that can withstand snow plows; and
  • Get improved or repaired storm drainage in the median.

The following shows which sections of the interstate will be improved:

  • Rose Brothers Paving Co. of Raleigh won the $12.5 million bid for the 14-mile stretch between mile markers 153 and 167 north of Rocky Mount.
  • S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson won the $2.9 million bid to resurface six miles between the Johnston-Wilson county line in Kenly and the Governor Hunt Road overpass in Wilson. Some additional repaving will be done around Exit 107 in Kenly.

For both, the work can begin later this fall. The portion in Halifax County will take two years complete. The portion in Wilson County is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.

The N.C. Department of Transportation approved both contracts this month. The winning bids were competitive – they were the lowest among the proposals received, and they also were below NCDOT engineering estimates.
