The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that out of an abundance of caution for drivers, single-lane closures are scheduled for the placement of beams on the new bridge that replaces the fire-damaged bridge at the Interstate 95 Cottman Avenue Interchange in Northeast Philadelphia. This closure ensures the operation will be completed safely and efficiently.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

  • Tuesday, August 29, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, southbound I-95 will be reduced to two lanes approaching and through the Cottman Avenue Interchange; and
  • Thursday, August 31, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, northbound I-95 will be reduced to two lanes approaching and through the Cottman Avenue Interchange.

Motorists are advised to avoid the work area or allow extra time for travel through the construction zone as significant backups will occur.

Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia was closed in both directions at the Cottman Avenue Interchange on Sunday, June 11, after a tanker truck crash and fire that destroyed the I-95 bridges over Cottman Avenue.

I-95 was reopened on June 23 to three lanes of traffic in each direction using a temporary roadway structure. The temporary roadway structure will remain in place until the outside sections of the new bridge are completed later this year. Traffic will then be shifted onto the completed sections of the overpasses while the center section of the bridge is built in 2024.
