AAA predicts that 72.2 million individuals will journey at least 50 miles from their homes during the Independence Day holiday from Saturday, June 28, to Sunday, July 6. This year’s forecast for domestic travel represents an increase of 1.7 million travelers compared to last year and 7 million more than in 2019. AAA’s Independence Day prediction accounts for two weekends rather than just one to more accurately capture the movement of holiday travelers.
According to Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, summer is a peak travel season, with July 4th being one of the most favored times for vacationing.
AAA estimates that 61.6 million individuals will be traveling by car, marking a 2.2% rise from the previous year and reaching the highest number ever recorded. This upcoming Independence Day holiday is anticipated to attract an extra 1.3 million road travelers compared to 2024. AAA advises that you should have regular vehicle maintenance performed before your journey and suggest putting together an emergency kit. During the week of July 4th last year, AAA addressed nearly 700,000 emergency roadside assistance requests for problems such as dead batteries, flat tires, car lockouts, and running out of fuel.
Motorists are experiencing slight rises in fuel prices, yet summer gasoline costs remain the lowest they have been since 2021. Throughout this year, the price of crude oil has contributed to keeping gas prices relatively low. The conflict between Israel and Iran has led to a rise in oil prices recently, although not significantly. It’s important to monitor the escalation and length of the conflict as key factors. Weather can be unpredictable. The Atlantic hurricane season has started, and NOAA forecasts a 60% likelihood of it being more active than usual. Hurricanes on the Gulf Coast can impact oil refineries and interrupt fuel distribution, resulting in a short-term rise in gasoline prices.
According to Hertz, travelers who are renting vehicles should anticipate that Thursday, July 3rd will be the peak day for car pickups. Some of the most popular locations, as indicated by early bookings, include Orlando, Denver, Boston, Oahu, and Seattle, which are also featured on AAA’s list of favored spots to visit during the July 4th holiday. According to Hertz, the majority of renters are interested in SUVs and midsize sedans.
