Travelers should pay attention to weather forecasts and adjust travel in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula to avoid driving during a winter storm expected to begin late Sunday afternoon.
Accumulating snow is expected across the Fredericksburg District. A range of 1-3 inches of snow is possible in the Fredericksburg area and along the I-95 corridor. Heavier snow is possible in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, where between 3-5 inches of snow may fall.
A wintry mix of rain and snow is expected to begin Sunday afternoon and then transition to snow. Snow is forecast to continue falling across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula overnight into Monday, through the morning commuter rush.
Road surfaces may be slick and hazardous while snow is falling. Motorist visibility may be limited by blowing snow. Plan to arrive at your destination before the storm begins or delay your trip until the storm has ended and road conditions have improved.
VDOT has prepared for this storm by replenishing road treatment materials and outfitting equipment with plows and material spreaders. Crews will mobilize on Sunday along I-95 and across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula to be in place when inclement weather begins. VDOT crews will work 24 hours a day, in 12-hour shifts, during the storm and afterward to respond to any hazardous road conditions.
Priority order for snow removal operations
VDOT crews focus first on plowing and treating roads that carry the most traffic, such as I-95 and primary routes (routes numbered 1 to 599, and Route 610 in Stafford County). Other priorities are secondary roads that connect with critical emergency service facilities, and high-volume secondary roads carrying more than an average of 3,500 vehicles a day.
While the storm is underway, crews will make repeated passes on I-95, primary roads, and critical secondary routes to keep them open and treated for emergency responders and other essential service providers.
