Georgia’s I-95/I-16 Interchange Project Moves Forward

The State Transportation Board passed a joint resolution between the Georgia Department of Transportation and the State Road and Tollway Authority to move forward with the I-16 road widening and interchange reconstruction projects at I-16 and I-95.

The resolution authorizes the projects to advance; authorizes the Department to manage the projects and act as SRTA’s agent, even though there is no toll associated with these projects; and authorizes Georgia DOT to make funds available for the outlined projects with annual appropriations. The projects are part of the Department’s Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP), and are currently in the procurement phase.

The I-16 project will expand the roadway from four to six lanes beginning at I-95 to I-516. Additionally, the interchange improvement project will reconstruct the existing I-16 at I-95 interchange and includes upgrading entrance and exit ramps, constructing new collector-distributor lanes, and installing new lighting and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology. Construction is projected to begin in early 2019.

Georgia DOT is making major investments in mobility with landmark improvements to the state’s transportation network. The MMIP program is an $11B investment to accelerate the delivery of 11 initial projects that add capacity and improve mobility throughout the state. The projects include three interchange projects, four Express Lanes projects, three highway widening projects and one commercial vehicles lanes project. All projects are expected to be under contract by 2026.
