I-95 travelers, get ready for Maine250 in 2026! That’s when the U.S. hits its 250th birthday, and Maine’s joining the party with some awesome events that spotlight our state’s slice of history and how it ties into America’s big story. Here’s a rundown of the coolest happenings lined up for the year.
Maine Historical Society: Revolutionary Maine: America at 250
All through 2026, the Maine Historical Society will have exhibits popping up in Portland and around the state, diving into Maine’s part in the American Revolution and what those founding ideals mean today. Key highlights?
- Declaration of Independence Statewide Tour:
From July to October, this traveling show hits all 16 Maine counties with one of just 26 original Dunlap Broadside prints from July 4, 1776—super cool interactive vibe! - Maine Celebrates 250! Fourth of July Bash:
A big community shindig at Portland’s City Hall Plaza on July 4, complete with dignitaries reading the Declaration, live music, and peeks at the document in the Pathways to Freedom exhibit and Wadsworth-Longfellow House. - Pathways to Freedom: Maine Stories of the American Revolution:
Their main 2026 exhibit in Portland (and online via Maine Memory Network) through December, packed with rare artifacts and tales from six Maine “Pathfinders” who lived the Revolution in unique ways. - Wadsworth-Longfellow House:
Fresh programs on General Peleg Wadsworth’s wartime adventures, Portland life back then, and how it inspired poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous “Paul Revere’s Ride.”
Abbe Museum: In the Shadow of the Eagle
Head to Bar Harbor and the Abbe Museum for this fresh art exhibit that spotlights the Wabanaki Nations in our national tale. Kicking off with the Revolution and Wabanaki roles, it covers military service, treaties, and self-governance through new pieces by top Wabanaki artists and loans from beyond the Dawnlands. Runs till October 30, 2026—check abbemuseum.org for details.
Farnsworth Art Museum: Maine: A Force Within American Art (1890–2026)
This epic year-long show at the Farnsworth Art Museum celebrates how Maine artists have rocked the American art scene. Think John Marin, Marsden Hartley, George Bellows, Charles Demuth, and more with Maine ties. On view through January 3, 2027.
York History Center: Revolutionary York
Remember when York was the U.S. capital for nine months in 1777-1778? Their “Revolutionary York” exhibit at the York History Center digs into York County’s huge role—like adopting the Articles of Confederation and sealing deals with France. Open July 2026 through December 2028.
Jane’s Walk
Love free walking chats inspired by Jane Jacobs? On Saturday, May 2, join volunteer-led strolls across Maine communities uncovering revolutionary stories right under your feet—how 250 years of change shows up in everyday spots and connects to the bigger American journey.
