To reduce delays for travelers waiting to enter I-95 northbound and southbound at exit 126 (Spotsylvania), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is starting construction this week on a road improvement project to widen Route 1 to six lanes near the interchange and add a second left turn lane for the interstate on-ramps.

The $42 million project will also build an auxiliary lane on I-95 northbound from the on-ramp to the Route 208 (Courthouse Road) overpass to help entering vehicles merge with interstate traffic. The I-95 northbound and southbound on-ramps will be widened to receive traffic from dual left turn lanes.

Along I-95 southbound, two noise barriers will be built. North of the Courthouse Road overpass, one barrier will be built in the vicinity of Paytes Lane and Phyllis Lane. South of the Courthouse Road overpass, another barrier will be built near Clarke Court.

This week, construction crews will begin by installing work zone barrier along the shoulders of I-95 northbound and southbound near exit 126.

During the week of June 9-13, Route 1 northbound travel lanes will shift slightly in the work zone to accommodate crews installing barriers along the median.

Motorists traveling on I-95 and Route 1 in Spotsylvania are asked to be alert for construction crews and slow-moving equipment near the exit 126 interchange. Periodic lane closures, temporary travel patterns and lane shifts are needed to build the improvements. Most lane closures will be scheduled to avoid peak travel times.

Construction will be complete in September 2027. The design-build project contractors are Shirley Contracting Company and Dewberry.

Another I-95 Exit 126 (Spotsylvania) Project Nearly Complete

As one road improvement project starts near the exit 126 interchange, another project is nearing completion. Construction is anticipated to finish approximately two months ahead of schedule in June 2025 on a separate project on the I-95 southbound off-ramp, Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway. Construction began in March 2023. Branch Civil is the project contractor.

The $16.6 million project, funded with SMART SCALE and local funds, added a second right turn lane on the I-95 southbound off-ramp, which is now open. With more storage for vehicles on the off-ramp, delays have been reduced at peak times on I-95 southbound. Other recently completed project improvements:

  • Route 1 southbound widened to include an additional travel lane from the I-95 southbound off-ramp to Southpoint Parkway
  • Second right turn lane added from Route 1 southbound to Southpoint Parkway
  • Federally-funded Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) improvements on Southpoint Parkway to reduce crash risk. Traffic islands on Southpoint Parkway allow left turns into side streets near Route 1, but restrict through and left-turning traffic from side streets
  • Additional right turn lane added to Southpoint Parkway approaching Route 1
