The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reports that I-95 travelers should expect delays overnight near exit 126 (Spotsylvania) in the Fredericksburg area this week, with varying single and double lane closures scheduled between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13 thru Thursday, April 16.
Construction is underway to improve the I-95 interchange at exit 126. This week, crews are shifting the northbound I-95 travel lanes slightly to the left. This will provide space to build a new I-95 northbound auxiliary lane from the on-ramp to the vicinity of the Route 208 (Courthouse Road) overpass. This lane will help motorists entering I-95 accelerate and safely merge into interstate traffic.
Monday, April 13 – Thursday, April 16
- Single I-95 northbound lane closure begins near exit 126 (Spotsylvania) at 8:00 p.m.
- Double lane closure begins at 9:00 p.m.
- All northbound lanes reopen by 5:00 a.m. the following morning.
Project Background
The $42 million project to improve the exit 126 interchange will also:
- Widen Route 1 near the interchange area to three lanes in each direction, and add a second left turn lane onto I-95 northbound and southbound.
- Widen the I-95 on-ramps at the intersection.
- Build two noise barriers along I-95 southbound.
Construction will be complete in September 2027.
