Driving From New England to Florida – A Detailed Itinerary

Day Two: Roanoke Rapids, NC  to Orlando, FL (658 miles)

Most of the heavy traffic is in your rear view mirror on your second day. It can be more leisurely now. Leaving early is not as important, because at the end of the day, no matter what time… you’re there! Never the less, leaving at 6:00 am means you’ll get to Orlando around 6:00 pm. with plenty of time to settle in.

  • 6:00 am : Head out knowing that this leg of the trip has a rainbow at the end. Traffic should be light at this time of the day.

Travel Tip: Fill the gas tank the night before and get your breakfast before you leave the hotel. Most hotels include some sort of free breakfast with your night stay.

  • 8:00 am – 8:30 am :  You’ll be near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Time for a rest stop and maybe a little breakfast. I-95, exit 49 has several fast food restaurants that serve breakfast.
  • By 9:00 am you should be approaching Lumberton, North Carolina
  • By 9:45 am you should be approaching the North Carolina/South Carolina border
  • 9:45 am – 10:15 am : Stop and stretch at the South Carolina Welcome Center (mile marker 195)

Travel Tip: South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices along I-95

  • Back on the road at 10:15 am and by 10:30 am you sould be approaching Florence, South Carolina
  • Santee, South Carolina is a popular stop for I-95 travelers. You should be near Santee by 11:00 am.
  • By 11:30 you should be approaching Walterboro, South Carolina.
  • By 12:00 noon you should be crossing the  South Carolina/Georgia state line.
  • 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm : Time for a rest stop, gas up and lunch. You’ll be near Savannah, Georgia. I-95, Exit 94 in Savannah has over a dozen restaurants and a good selection of gas stations. It’s a great stop for I-95 travelers.
  • By 2:00 pm. you should be approaching Brunswick, Georgia. This is your last chance to gas up before you hit Florida.

Travel Tip: If you need gas, it’s best to get it before you enter Florida, where gas prices are more expensive.

  • By 2:30 pm you should be approaching the Georgia/Florida state line. Why not make a quick stop at the Florida Welcome Center for some fresh (and free) orange juice! Just make it a quick one… traffic is building in Jacksonville.
  • By 3:15 pm you should be approaching Jacksonville, Florida. It’s still early enough to miss the afternoon rush hour. Great scheduling!

Travel Tip: If you think you’ll be hitting Jacksonville after 4:00 pm. you might want to consider taking I-295 around the city. It can save you time and aggrevation.

  • By 4:00 pm you should be south of Jacksonville, Florida and headed for your destination.
  • By 5:00 pm you should be approaching Daytona, Florida and the I-95/I-4 exit to Orlando.
  • By 6:00 pm you should be approaching Orlando, Florida… not a great time as far as traffic is concerned. There is lots of I-4 construction going on in Orlando and passing through is tough. Here’s a alternate route:

Travel Tip: If you are headed south of Orlando (Disney, Tampa, etc.) you might want to consider taking FL Route 417 instead. Take I-4, exit 101 to FL 417. It connects back to I-4 near Disney. It’s a toll road but worth it!
